Health Risks From Bats in Micro

Bats are the leading source of rabies transmission to humans in the United States. A bat bite can be so small you might not notice it, which is why the CDC recommends seeking medical attention if you wake up in a room with a bat or find one near a child or pet. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

Bat droppings carry a fungus called Histoplasma capsulatum. When dried guano is disturbed, the spores become airborne and can cause histoplasmosis, a lung infection. The CDC and NIOSH guidance on histoplasmosis warns that large accumulations in attics are especially dangerous if you stir them up during cleaning or renovation work.

Bat bugs are parasites that look almost identical to bed bugs. They feed on roosting bats, but once bats are removed, the bugs migrate into living spaces looking for a new host. A proper cleanup after exclusion eliminates bat bugs along with the guano.

Bats in Micro, NC

North Carolina is home to 17 bat species. Nine of those hold some level of conservation status, and four are federally listed as endangered. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission tracks populations statewide and sets the rules for how bats can be managed.

Signs of Bats in Your Home

• Guano accumulation. Bat droppings are small, dark pellets that pile up below roosting spots. They crumble easily and contain shiny insect fragments, which sets them apart from mouse droppings.
• Staining at entry points. Bats leave dark, oily rub marks around the gaps they use to enter and exit. These brown or black smudges build up over time and are hard to miss once you know what to look for.
• Squeaking and scratching at dusk. Bats become active around sunset and make high-pitched squeaking sounds as they wake up. You may also hear scratching or rustling noises in the walls or ceiling.
• Bats flying from the roofline at dusk. Step outside about 20 minutes after sunset and watch your roofline. If bats are roosting in your attic, you will see them drop out from gaps and fly off to feed.
• Strong ammonia smell. A large accumulation of guano and urine produces a sharp ammonia odor. If you notice this smell coming from your attic or walls, you likely have a sizable colony.
