Look for guano in the attic, on porches below soffit gaps, or on windowsills beneath entry points.
• Staining at entry points. Bats leave dark, oily rub marks around every gap they use. These marks build up over time into visible brown or black stains on soffits, fascia boards, and brick. The staining comes from the natural oils in bat fur and is a reliable sign of an active entry point.
• Squeaking and scratching at dusk. Bats are nocturnal and leave the roost at sunset to feed. You may hear high-pitched squeaking, chittering, or faint scratching in the attic or walls as they prepare to exit. The sounds are lighter and higher-pitched than those made by squirrels or rats.
• Bats flying from the roofline at dusk. Stand outside at sunset and watch your roofline. If bats are leaving from a soffit gap, ridge vent, or gable area, there is a colony inside. Even one or two bats emerging from the same spot each evening means a roost is established.
• Strong ammonia smell. A large guano deposit produces a sharp, ammonia-like odor. In homes with big colonies, the smell can be noticeable from the living space below the attic, particularly on warm days.
